In the dynamic world of higher education, where innovation intersects with tradition, Sweeny Youkhane stands out as a beacon of creativity, empathy, and strategic thinking. With a master’s degree in educational counseling from the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s in psychology from Palo Alto University, Sweeny’s academic foundation has paved the way for a career dedicated to student success. Her professional journey at Northeastern University spans roles as an Academic and Professional Advisor, Adjunct Instructor, and now Assistant Director of Graduate Student Services at Khoury College of Computer Sciences. Each step has shaped her into a leader who bridges the gap between technology and humanity, making her role as impactful as it is multifaceted.
“What I love most about my role is that it’s a perfect mix of creativity, strategy, collaboration, and problem-solving, and every day brings something new,” Sweeny said. Overseeing programming for students in cutting-edge fields like Computer Science, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence, she finds her work both rewarding and demanding. “The challenges I face often come from staying ahead in an evolving field, but I thrive in this environment. It keeps me on my toes and constantly learning, which is something I really value.”
Ms. Youkhane was drawn to Northeastern University for its commitment to experiential learning and innovation. “Northeastern has always stood out to me because of its commitment to experiential learning and its strong emphasis on innovation,” she explained. The Khoury College of Computer Sciences, with its leadership in AI and Data Science, offered the perfect environment to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the field. “The way the university connects students, faculty, and industry makes it an ideal place to grow professionally and contribute to groundbreaking research.”
One of Sweeny’s proudest moments was organizing the Khoury College’s graduation dinner last year. “It was an event that brought together so many different people who had worked hard throughout the year, and it was incredibly rewarding to help create an atmosphere of celebration and connection,” she recalled. From coordinating logistics to recognizing student achievements, the event was a testament to teamwork and community. “Seeing the students’ faces as they celebrated their accomplishments and shared their excitement for the future was a reminder of why I love being part of a community that’s committed to growth and collaboration.”
With a background that includes advising student athletes, international students, and graduate students, Sweeny has honed a unique skill set. “The most important skill I bring to my work is my ability to bridge the gap between technology and empathy,” she shared. “In the world of computer science, it’s easy to focus purely on the technical aspects, but I believe that understanding the human side of technology – how people interact with it and how it impacts their lives – is crucial.”
As Sweeny looks to the future, she is eager to deepen her understanding of project management and leadership in higher education. “Higher education is a unique environment, and I am excited to learn more about the best practices for navigating the complexities of academic institutions,” she said. This focus on leadership will enable her to drive initiatives that support both students and faculty, fostering collaboration and innovation across departments.
Outside of work, Sweeny’s passions include oil painting, playing pickleball, and diving into science fiction novels—especially the works of Ray Bradbury. It is a balance that fuels both creativity and curiosity, qualities that she brings into her professional world every day.
For those navigating their own career paths, Sweeny offers a simple yet profound piece of advice: “Practice patience. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and it often requires long-term commitment, perseverance, and resilience.” She emphasized the importance of learning and growing from the process, even when progress feels slow. “Sometimes, the best things take time.”
In a world where technology often takes center stage—especially here in Silicon Valley—Sweeny Youkhane reminds us of the importance of empathy, collaboration, and patience. At Khoury College, students are fortunate to have a leader like her—someone who understands that education isn’t just about learning; it’s about thriving in a fast-paced world while staying connected to what truly matters.
