New Graduate Certificate in AI Applications for Data Mining

May 21, 2025

By Meredith Hutcheson
New Graduate Certificate in AI Applications for Data Mining

Beginning in fall semester 2026, Northeastern in Silicon Valley will offer a new interdisciplinary program designed to help professionals gain an understanding of recent developments in AI technology that is anchored to practical usage. The Graduate Certificate in AI Applications for Data Mining comprises four credit-bearing courses that approach the subject from different angles: data science, solutions design, computer science, and legal and regulatory practice. Designed to be appropriate both for technical professionals seeking an update to their skills, and for nontechnical professionals looking to develop a new area of competence, the certificate does not require prior programming experience.

Bringing data analysis techniques to new levels

Professionals in a wide range of industries and job functions interact with large volumes of data in the course of their work. The ability to extract meaning from this mountain of information has become more accessible than ever before with the introduction of new AI tools in the last few years.

The concentration course that is offered in the curriculum of this certificate, Data Mining for Engineering Applications, may be of particular use for professionals working in engineering fields such as manufacturing, sustainability, and energy. However, the concepts introduced are equally valuable for other high data workplaces like healthcare, urban planning, and business.

Students will learn machine learning techniques and statistical models that can deliver meaningful results when interacting with large data sets. The course grounds its concepts in real world data mining case studies, and explores working with data through the stages of preparation, analysis, and visualization.

Human-centered AI: context and application

With the current pace of change in the AI sector, a foundational knowledge of both the systems themselves and the contexts in which they are deployed can give you firmer footing to make future judgment calls. The graduate certificate includes three courses that will give students a strong awareness of the space.

A computer science course addresses some of the technical systems that come together under the AI umbrella, like perception, representation, reasoning, and learning. In another course, students will focus on legal, regulatory, and ethical considerations that are impacting AI in the business landscape. The material goes in depth on complex areas of consideration that come into play when embracing the new technology, such as data security and privacy. And the third foundational course, Human-Centered AI, gives students hands-on work designing AI solutions, grounded in user-centered design principles.

Flexible and stackable

The program is designed to meet the needs of a range of students.

The pacing of the program is very flexible to accommodate working professionals; students may choose to take breaks between courses if that works best for their schedule. Students looking for a faster pace can also adjust their schedule accordingly.

The certificate also meets F1 visa requirements, making it available for both incoming international students as well as graduating students who wish to extend their studies.

And the credits earned in the program are stackable towards master’s programs at Northeastern.

Certificate joins a portfolio of AI-focused programs

The graduate certificate introduces an AI curriculum for a new set of students, and is the latest in a series of educational options in the field at Northeastern in Silicon Valley.

For prospective students who have previous knowledge and experience in computer science, the MS in Artificial Intelligence program is a full degree option that allows for a deeper exploration of the technical and theoretical areas that interest each student.

For those who have no background in the field but want to develop skills to be able to work as a software engineer or programmer, the MS in Computer Science Align program is a unique option that brings students from baseline to specialization within an average of 2.5 years. This program offers a machine learning concentration that opens up many paths in AI.

And also launching this fall, Northeastern has partnered with the Cloud Security Alliance to offer a new certification in Trusted AI Safety. This professional education program is most appropriate for professionals currently building, managing, or auditing intelligent systems.

Advising is available for prospective students

The Northeastern in Silicon Valley team is available to help clarify the different options available from the university, both locally and throughout the university network. Interested parties are encouraged to email [email protected] for individual assistance.
