Silicon Valley Team Feature: Elly Lim

Silicon Valley Team Feature: Elly Lim

Elly Lim, the Assistant Director of Student Affairs at Northeastern University’s Silicon Valley campus, is a driven and heartfelt champion for creating transformative student experiences. With a background rooted in student affairs and a genuine love for fostering connections, Elly has made it her mission to help graduate students feel at home while navigating their academic journeys. Her work is a blend of creativity, empathy, and leadership, all aimed at ensuring students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Originally from Southern California, Elly’s journey to Northeastern began after earning her bachelor’s degree in human development from UC San Diego and completing her Master of Education in student affairs at UCLA. After six years at UCLA, she was ready for a new adventure and found herself drawn to Northeastern’s Silicon Valley campus. The unique intersection of technology and education in the Bay Area captivated her, and she saw it as an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. “Being in Silicon Valley allows us to offer students insights into the rapidly evolving tech world while learning and growing alongside them,” she explains.

In her role, Ms. Lim focuses on building a vibrant and engaged student community. She finds great fulfillment in creating spaces where students connect, form cross-cultural friendships, and feel a sense of belonging. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see students consider this campus their home away from home,” she shares. However, the role isn’t without its challenges. With a majority of international students, understanding their unique needs requires mindfulness and adaptability. Elly credits her Student Ambassadors for helping bridge this gap, ensuring that every student feels supported and heard.

A key part of Elly’s role involves working directly with student leaders, and one of the most rewarding aspects is overseeing Student Interest Groups (SIGs). She collaborates closely with these leaders, offering resources and strategic support to empower them in bringing their ideas to life. “Seeing students share their interests, build meaningful connections, and create lasting impact through these groups is incredibly fulfilling,” she reflects.

One of Elly’s proudest accomplishments is the launch of the Graduate Leadership Institute (GLI) on campus. For the first time, students are participating in an in-person version of this leadership program, which was previously only available virtually. Developed by Northeastern’s LEAD360 program, GLI equips graduate students with essential leadership skills through group discussions and activities. “It’s inspiring to see students challenge themselves and discover the leader within,” Elly says. She hopes GLI will become a signature program, offered every term to empower future student leaders.

Elly’s approach to her work is rooted in her belief in an asset-based mindset, a concept she learned during graduate school. Inspired by Tara J. Yosso’s community cultural wealth model, Elly emphasizes focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses. “We all have innate talents and assets,” she says. “By recognizing and building on these, we can overcome challenges and celebrate our wins, both big and small.” This philosophy guides her interactions with students, encouraging them to see their own potential and thrive.

As someone who values continuous learning, Elly is also considering pursuing a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration or Educational Leadership to deepen her understanding of the field and enhance her ability to support students in an ever-changing world. She recognizes that the education landscape is constantly evolving, requiring continuous learning to stay current with emerging trends and technologies. “As I work with new generations of students and navigate technological advancements alongside them, it’s essential for me to stay informed—whether it’s understanding how students use new social media platforms, integrating AI into their learning experiences, or even keeping up with the latest memes,” Elly shares. She believes that staying up to date with technological innovations and cultural shifts is crucial for effectively supporting students. “Understanding how students engage with the world, the platforms they use, and the ways they communicate allows me to build stronger connections and provide more relevant guidance,” she adds.

For those navigating their own career paths, Elly offers a simple yet powerful piece of advice: advocate for yourself. “Know your worth and be proud of the work you’ve accomplished,” she says. “Your story matters, and sharing it confidently can open doors you never imagined.”

Outside of work, Elly enjoys exploring the Bay Area, discovering new neighborhoods, and indulging in its diverse food scene. From pastry shops in San Francisco to picnics in South Bay parks, she embraces the region’s vibrant culture.

Elly Lim’s dedication to student success, innovative approach to community building, and her commitment to lifelong learning make her an indispensable member of the Northeastern community. Through her work, she continues to inspire students and colleagues alike, proving that leadership is not just about guiding others but also about growing together.
