Naeem Zafar: Empowering Students Through Real-World Experience at Northeastern University
by Jussara Oliveira Barbosa, MS in Project Management ’25
Naeem Zafar has been a prominent figure in the academic world, dedicating seven years of his career to teaching at Northeastern University and nearly two decades at UC Berkeley. Zafar’s journey is one of commitment to practical education, particularly in entrepreneurship. He was instrumental in designing and launching the Semester in Silicon Valley Program at Northeastern in 2017, which aims to immerse students in the region’s unique startup culture.
What sets Zafar apart is his deep connection to the entrepreneurial world. He founded seven startups, acted as CEO for five, raised over $100 million in venture capital, and mentored dozens of companies. This extensive experience brings a unique depth to his teaching. His courses don’t just offer theoretical knowledge but are grounded in the practicalities of venture capital, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship, drawing directly from his experiences and the vibrant startup ecosystem of Silicon Valley.
Zafar also emphasizes the evolving landscape of education. He believes the traditional university model is becoming obsolete, advocating instead for more apprenticeship-based learning, smaller “nano” degrees, and hands-on experience. His program allows students to work at startups and IT companies, gaining invaluable experience while learning how companies raise funds, scale, and navigate the business world.
His teaching approach is innovative, sometimes co-teaching with experts from the field. For example, his venture capital course is taught alongside a practicing VC, providing students with dual perspectives. Zafar’s aim is to create an immersive, real-world educational experience where students not only learn from textbooks but also engage with industry leaders, apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, and develop the skills necessary to succeed in today’s rapidly evolving business environment.
In addition to his academic and entrepreneurial pursuits, Zafar is a lover of fine dining and travel, having visited 84 countries and dined at 24 Michelin-starred restaurants. His zest for life outside the classroom mirrors his approach to education: continually seeking new experiences, learning, and personal growth.
When asked about career advice, Zafar emphasizes the importance of connecting the dots between different disciplines, encouraging students to combine fields like biology and AI to drive innovation. He also stresses that real learning begins after graduation, urging students to embrace lifelong learning and curiosity.
