Biography
Dr. Mark Miller joined the faculty of Northeastern in Silicon Valley in 2019. Teaching students in the Align program, which introduces people with unrelated bachelor’s degrees to master’s level computer science, he is dedicated to the challenge of making complex topics accessible.
Dr. Miller’s position outside of Northeastern is as Founder and President of Learningtech.org, a 501(c)(3) non-profit he incorporated in 2000. The organization connects K-12 schools with the technical information and services they need to incorporate technology into the classroom as new systems arise. With a goal of preventing underserved districts from falling behind, Learningtech.org provides an array of services including E-Rate application assistance, technology transformation plan preparation, professional development for educators, IT consultation, and sponsored research in the areas of educational technology and computer science education.
Previously, he served as Lab Director for Learning & Tools at Apple’s Advanced Technology Group, where he oversaw major educational initiatives like Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT). He also founded the Machine Intelligence Research Program at Texas Instruments’ Central Research Labs, spearheading AI research focused on educational tools, NLP, and expert systems. In addition, he co-founded a venture capital-backed spin off from TI called Computer*Thought Corporation where he led the design of an advanced instructional system to retrain software engineers for the Ada programming language, then being implemented for the International Space Station.
A recognized historian of the Logo programming language, Dr. Miller co-authored the comprehensive History of Logo article (ACM SIGPLAN, 2020). He is also President Emeritus of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) San Jose chapter and a strong advocate for K–12 CS education equity and access in California.
