We've been trying something new from the start.
For more than 100 years, Northeastern has been a world leader in experience-powered learning, creating a distinctive approach to teaching and research. In 1898, we launched in Boston with evening classes at a time when higher education for working professionals was unknown.
In 1909, the College of Engineering began integrating cooperative learning into its programs: a system of pairing work experience with in-classroom instruction. The other schools and departments followed suit. Northeastern has been a leader in experiential learning ever since, and we are proud to rank #1 in co-ops and internships in the U.S. News & World Report.
Tackling the world's biggest challenges
With 37 research centers and 20 research institutes, Northeastern is at the forefront of interdisciplinary, use-inspired discoveries. Our ethos is not just to study challenges, but to work to solve them and develop actionable strategies and market-ready solutions.
As we look to the future, our goal is to be the indispensable university for learners and innovators who want to see their work make a direct impact on the world. Read our Academic Plan to learn more.
